Sky Italia asked THINK|CATTLEYA and MONOGRID to create a website that would be a 360° video experience where the user was immersed directly in the reality of Gomorra Backstage, before the launch of the second season of the TV series. High-quality, fast and fluid loading was required on desktop and all mobile devices.
Following the creation of the website, we were asked to create an APP by transforming the 360° video experience of the website into a VR experience through the Samsung Gear VR device: with this experience the user could live the backstage of the series and visit it 360° from different points of view.
The details of the experience are cared for and match the look, colors and feelings of the TV series. The latest browser technologies such as the full screen, gyroscope and WebGL are also utilized, always ensuring smoothness and fluidity. The experience is divided in several chapters which are revealed together, as the TV series unfolds, to keep tensions high and the user interested. Each of the chapters has its owns special contents that are related to the series, so the Gomorra fans can discover and share them.
The user can navigate the chapters by selecting specific locations from the fictional map that was created to symbolize each chapter that is composed of a designed introductory title, specific music soundtrack, and carefully placed cue point for special content hotspots. We also included the option for the user to switch to different points of view within the same scene, using multiple 360° footage.
The app has been developed using the latest Unity engine which provides great flexibility and control over the look and feel of the 360 environment.
Using a dynamic video texture combined with 3D placed interface elements allowed us to bring the Gomorra film set to life and immerse the user in the making of this critically acclaimed series. Special attention to details was paid for the user interaction.
We devised a system where user interaction does not stand in the way of the immersive footage: UI elements are placed strategically and behave in a way that does not interfere with the environment.
Wearing the Samsung Gear VR the user can immerse himself into the set of the second season of Gomorra: he can move around through actors, make-up artists, camera operator and sound mixer, taking part in the shooting of some scenes, looking from different point of views.
The user is catapulted into a virtual reality that is faithful to the features of the TV series, a reality in which the user can move and explore, feeling totally immersed in the backstage of Gomorra.
