We love ping pong and used to spend our lunch time playing it in our studio. It goes without saying we started experimenting and conceived an interactive version of the classic table.
We wanted to explore the boundaries of this peculiar sport analysing the movements of the ping pong ball during a match and trying to report them graphically on the game table. Here’s how it was born Ping Pong Interactive.
To realize the idea we had in mind we used a webcam able to reveal the movement of the ball during the match. The images of the webcam gave information to a computer that projected on the table geometric lines that portrayed every single movement of the ping pong ball. That was possible thanks to a visual algorithm created with Generative Art able to recognize the movement, the colour and the shape of the ball.
The result is a unique ping pong table able to give the player a very unique experience every match, thanks to the geometrical style graphic created with the mathematic calculation. That’s why we can consider Ping Pong Interactive an authentic tribute to the science of sport. Our installation was also shown at Numeroventi studio in Florence.
